The Shapleigh School will celebrate reading throughout the month of March, starting with a celebration of Read Across America Day on Monday, March 3. Sponsored by the National Education Association, Read Across America Day is celebrated by thousands of students throughout the country, and coincides with the birthday of "Dr. Seuss", who would have turned 110 years old on March 2.

Read Across America Day also kicks off Shapleigh's second annual "Iditaread" Challenge. Coordinated by reading teacher Miranda Casey, the Iditaread Challenge encourages students to read for 1,151 minutes during March (one minute per mile of the course used for this month's Iditarod sled dog race in Alaska). Students will log in the minutes that they've read using the Reading Rewards website, and receive prizes when certain "checkpoints" are reached. There's a contest for the student in each grade level who logs the most minutes read, as well as a contest between homerooms for the most minutes read.
