McPherson Top Fifth Grader At State Geography Bee

Shapleigh School fifth grader Conor McPherson was the highest-placing fifth grader at the state level competition of the National Geographic Bee, held on Friday April 1 at the University of Maine at Farmington. McPherson nearly made it to the Final Round of 10 competitors (all middle school students) before bowing out.

McPherson won Shapleigh School's school-wide geography bee on January 21. He was informed of his selection to the Maine State Bee on February 26 by fifth grade teachers Janice Fickett and Doug Bennington.

One champion from each state advances to the national competition, which will be held May 22-25 at the National Geograpgic Society headquarters in Washington, D.C.
