posted Oct 15, 2015, 10:34 AM by Seth Cole
There are two great upcoming fundraisers taking place for Kittery's school-based End 68 Hours of Hunger program, it was recently announced.

On Friday, October 16, starting at 6pm, there will be seven great local bands playing at four downtown Kittery venues. Donations will be accepted at each location, and all proceeds go to Kittery's End 68 Hours of Hunger program. The seven bands performing are: Soggy Po Boys, Martin England & The Reconstructed, Kate Redgate, Broken Amps, Seth Gooby, Kid Coyote, and JD3. The four venues are: Kittery Dance Hall2nd Christian ChurchBuoy, and Doo.

From now through November 6, Just Us Chickens Gallery in Kittery is selling raffle tickets for $300 baskets of local artisans work. Tickets are available at 3 for $5.00, and baskets can be viewed at Just Us Chickens Gallery. All proceeds go to the End 68 Hours of Hunger program.

The mission of Kittery’s End 68 Hours of Hunger program is to fill backpacks with nourishing food each weekend for children who would otherwise be hungry between free school lunch on Friday and free school breakfast on Monday.

Kittery’s program began March 10, 2012. Volunteers filled backpacks for 12 students attending Mitchell Elementary School. By March 10, 2014, 100 volunteers were serving 96 children each weekend from Mitchell, Shapleigh Middle School, and Traip Academy (High School). End 68 Hours of Hunger of Kittery serves 9% of Kittery’s school population. In 2013 we filled 3,192 bags at a cost of approximately $10 per bag in food or dollars.

All funds donated to Kittery’s End 68 Hours of Hunger go directly to buying food for Kittery’s hungry children. All personnel who shop for the food, restock the shelves, keep the books, raise funds, pack the backpacks, and deliver the backpacks to the children are volunteers. First Baptist Church of Kittery Point donates space for our distribution center and Kennebunk Savings Bank gives us our free checking account.

If you are interested in contributing food, End 68 Hours of Hunger receptacles are located at Kittery Town Hall, Kittery Point’s Enoteca, and Merri Stitches of Portsmouth. If you would like to send us a check, please make it out to Kittery’s End 68 Hours of Hunger and mail it to our treasurer, David Gooch, at 276 Haley Road, Kittery, Maine, 03904. If you have questions or want to volunteer, please phone or e-mail one of our coordinators: Pauli Rines at 207-451-9054, prines8@gmail.com or Kris Lynes at 207- 337-1294, KrisLynes@aol.com.
