Education Activist Visits Shapleigh Sixth Graders

Shapleigh School sixth graders were visited on Friday, March 11 by activist for education, Michael Thurston. Mr. Thurston is a teacher in Winslow, Maine and is very active in standing up for public education at the state and national level. Sixth grade students are currently researching causes and the activism for/against them such as: bullying, e-waste, education for young girls in developing countries, and animal rights. Students wrote essays on these topics which will in turn be developed into informational web pages. It’s our hope that our “calls to action” recruit others towards our causes. Mr. Thurston provided students with a real-life connection to the importance of this unit.
