Shapleigh School fifth grader Frances Burke, and fourth grade Claire Stith, were named the Rotary Club of Kittery's Students of the Month for May. They were honored at the Rotary's monthly Student of the Month Breakfast, held at Kittery Estates, on Tuesday, May 22.

Some quotes from staff members about Franny (pictured at right):

"I had the pleasure of Franny landing in my class when her family moved here during the beginning of her third grade year. She admitted to being a little nervous and sad to be leaving her best friend. Her sense of humor, ability to tell a great story and kindness led her to a seamless transition and within a few short weeks you would never have known she hadn't been at Mitchell since kindergarten. I was one lucky teacher to move to Shapleigh with Franny and remain her teacher for a second year where she continued to be a role model for her peers. She is a diligent student, engaged learner with the ability to advocate for herself and learn through her mistakes. Other students were always eager to work with Franny as she has the ability to learn while bringing in appropriate laughter, humor and fun to the classroom."

"Franny is a valuable member of the beginner band trumpet section at Shapleigh! She is a hard worker, a talented player, and brings a boatload of energy and enthusiasm to every rehearsal. Well done Franny!"

"Each day, Franny brings a sense of thoughtful contemplation to writing class. Her input, questions, and ideas are creative, thought-provoking, and indicative of the deep thinking that occurs about topics we study. Although helpful with task completion, her no-nonsense attitude belies a sense of playfulness that comes through in her writing, where she shows you that she can be witty, appropriately irreverent and a tiny bit sarcastic. She consistently strives to reach a level higher than she thinks you expect her to reach. I love her total embrace of learning--she is why we do what we do. May the love of learning and insistence of curiosity continue to remain strong in her as she grows into the lovely young woman that she will become."

And some quotes from staff about Claire:

“Claire is a beautiful, kind and generous girl. I look forward to seeing Claire every morning because I know I will get the best greeting ever!”

“Claire has a spark to her. She truly embodies the definition of kindness, love and compassion. A unique gift for her age.”

“She’s just so genuine...every time I pop into the classroom I see her ready to learn, giving someone a compliment, smiling or being kind to someone.”

“Claire is a ray of sunshine! Her positive attitude is contagious. She always shows up to art class enthused and ready to try something new. She has a creative spark and brings fantastic ideas and input to our lessons. Claire is also great at showing support for her classmates. She is always encouraging and a great friend. Her warm and friendly disposition puts others at ease. Congrats to Claire! We are so lucky to have her as part of our school community.”
